Oh no || Starting Term 4 at SGU
Term 4 at SGU
Due to COVID-19, we’re still remote. Honestly, I’m a little grateful because the schedule is packed. How did people have time to commute to school and home?! I’m seriously concerned. I only hear stressful rumors about T4 that are topped off with a “but I loved what we learned”.
Term 4 Structure & Content
It’s a long hall. We just finished a 6 week T3 and now we’re heading into 18 weeks of 24. T1 and T2 were only around 16 weeks. So we have 4 modules. Foundation to Clinical Medicine (4 weeks), Cardio and Renal (4 weeks), Respiratory and hematopoietic (4 weeks), and then GI, endo, and reproductive (6 weeks). It’s sounds like Year 1 in 18 weeks and much worse since we’re doing pathology and pharmacology. I’m incredibly excited to learn, but I’m equally nervous. It feels like this will be a fine line between me and burnout.
Term 4 Schedule
So…
There were 30 small groups in Term 2. There were 30 small groups in Term 3. There are 56 small groups in Term 4! It looks like there are more days with small groups and IMCQ and lecture than just days with lecture. I also heard that we have to make our own presentations for small group. I’m really unsure where I’m supposed to whip out all this time with the content becoming more complex.
Outside Resources
I have heard from multiple sources that Pathoma is necessary. For now, I’m using FreeMedTube and USMLErx for practice questions. Of course, I’ve also got my ole faithful anki by my side.
Extracirriculars
We’ve only held 2-3 PLGs so far. I’m not sure what I’ll be capable of during this time. It almost seems like I should conserve energy to study. SGU nutrition club is reviewing some interesting articles and I’m so excited to see what the research team comes up with.
On a side note, I’m thinking of starting the ADAPT health coach program through the Kresser Institute. I feel like we don’t really learn or practice talking to people as humans. This term we have a lot of patient encounters so maybe I’ll change my mind. The current vibe is that we tell people what to do and we learn why we tell them that, but what actually helps someone. change? What could I say to someone to take charge of their life?
Well my friends, I’ll see you on the flip side! Who knows who I’ll be in 4 weeks haha.
